What began as a practical next step after college slowly revealed itself to be the career I was meant to grow into.
I knew early on that I wanted to dip my toes into real estate. I got my license while finishing my marketing and advertising degree in 2004, and—enchanted by life in Charlotte—I jumped right in and started selling homes. Just a year later, I earned my broker’s license.
The transition from college into real estate was overwhelming at first.
I knew the most important thing was to be well-educated and
well-prepared, and luckily, I was blessed with an incredible mentor who took me under her wing. I still lean on mentors to this day.

Just as I was getting the hang of the business, the recession hit. My business took a major hit and the money stopped coming in. It was scary. To make ends meet, I added property management into my business, and that experience opened my eyes to the investment side of real estate in a whole new way.
When I went back to selling homes solely, I felt renewed and refocused. I recommitted, and dove even deeper into learning the business. Thanks to my experience as a property manager, I finally felt ready to invest myself. Since then, I’ve bought and sold 17 homes personally. I love every part of the process—the renovations, and getting a property to the point where I can sell it at a great price. When it comes to investing and flipping, I’ve done all of it.

But the pace caught up to me. I was closing around 60 homes a year with no help. I was burned out and I was looking for a way to level up my customer service. That’s when I started hiring a team, beginning with a transaction coordinator. It changed everything. With support behind me, I finally had the time to answer questions, and focus on what I love most: the personal interactions with clients. That experience forced me to evaluate my service with honest, critical eyes—something I still do every single year.
Once my professional life found its balance, my next goal became clear: start a family. But that journey came with its own challenges, including realizing that my partner at the time wanted a different future. Ending a 16-year relationship was tough. I felt like I had failed. But that ending also opened the door to a beautiful new chapter.

I met my husband, Christopher, 7 years ago. From the very beginning, I asked him if he wanted kids, and his answer was yes. We married in 2023 and began the journey toward building a family. I’m incredibly grateful that we were able to adopt baby Campbell recently, and we have another baby on the way.
Becoming a father has been one of the greatest blessings of my life. Our dog, Sol, is absolutely part of the family too. Outside of work, I love cooking complex dishes, spending time with friends, entertaining, and traveling—especially to the beach and the mountains.
Looking back, every pivot, every challenge, and every leap of faith has shaped who I am today. Real estate hasn’t just been my career—it’s been the path that led me to growth, stability, and now, a family of my own.

I value genuine connection and approach every client relationship with the intention of building a
long-term friendship. Before starting the real estate process, I take the time to understand who they are—their values, lifestyle, and vision—so I can match them with the right home and neighborhood. I offer thoughtful options, listen closely to their feedback, and, for out-of-state buyers, I love introducing them to Charlotte and everything my city has to offer.
My communication style is direct because I see myself as my clients’ protector. If a property isn’t the right fit, I will say so without hesitation. I act as a mentor, providing clear guidance, presenting different possibilities, and offering honest analysis to support their decision-making. I also make sure clients have access to trusted vendors—anyone they may need throughout the process.
Overall, I aim to make buying or selling a home an enjoyable experience. Real estate is a major milestone, and I want clients to feel supported, informed, and genuinely excited every step of the way.
Sincerely,
Billy Shugart
