How Far Is Too Far? Commute Times in Charlotte, NC—and What Buyers Are Really Willing to Do

by Billy Shugart, Shugart Realty Group

If you’ve been house hunting in Charlotte lately, you’ve probably asked yourself some version of this: “How far am I actually willing to drive every day?”

It’s one of the biggest decision points for buyers right now—and the answer isn’t as simple as it used to be.

What’s an “Acceptable” Commute in Charlotte?

In most major cities, a 45–60 minute commute is pretty standard. Charlotte used to lean shorter—but that’s changing.

Today, most of my buyers fall into three buckets:

15–20 minutes: The “I don’t want to think about my commute” crowd
20–35 minutes: The sweet spot for most buyers
35–50 minutes: Buyers willing to stretch for the right house

And here’s the shift I’m seeing: more and more buyers are open to that 30–45 minute range if it means getting everything else they want.

Are Buyers Willing to Go Further for the Right House?

Short answer? Yes—but only if it’s worth it.

Buyers today are making trade-offs more strategically than ever:

A bigger lot or better layout
New construction vs. resale
More privacy or better schools
Walkability vs. space

I see it all the time—someone starts wanting to be 10 minutes from Uptown Charlotte, and then ends up happily 30 minutes out because the house checks every box.

‍‍‍ It’s Not Just About Work Anymore

One of the biggest changes post-2020? Commutes aren’t just about getting to the office.

Buyers are now thinking about:

  • Family proximity (daycare, grandparents, co-parents)
  • Schools and activities
  • Lifestyle (gyms, restaurants, parks)
  • Hybrid work schedules

So instead of one commute, it’s really multiple daily routes.

For example, someone might work hybrid in Uptown Charlotte, have childcare near SouthPark, and still want easy access to weekends in Lake Norman.

That’s where location strategy becomes everything.

The Charlotte Reality: Traffic + Growth

Charlotte is growing fast—and infrastructure is still catching up in certain corridors (looking at you, I-77 ).

What that means for buyers:

A “20-minute commute” can quickly become 35+ during peak hours
Certain areas feel closer on a map than they actually drive
Light rail access (like the Lynx Blue Line) can be a game changer for some buyers

This is why I always tell my clients:
Drive it during rush hour before you decide.

My Advice as a Charlotte Real Estate Expert

Here’s how I guide my clients through this:

Decide your non-negotiables first (home vs. location)
Test the commute in real time (not just Google Maps at 2pm)
Think beyond work—map your full daily life
Be flexible if the house is exceptional

Because at the end of the day, buyers don’t regret an extra 10–15 minutes in the car…
but they do regret settling on a house that didn’t quite fit.

Final Thought: It’s About Balance

There’s no “perfect” commute time in Charlotte anymore—just the one that fits your life.

Some buyers will always prioritize location. Others will chase the perfect house. Most land somewhere in the middle.

If you’re trying to figure out that balance, that’s where I come in. I help my clients not just find a home—but find the right home based on how they actually live day to day.
